Recognizing Excellence in Brownfield Redevelopment

The Canadian Urban Institute's annual Brownie Awards program recognizes leadership, innovation and environmental sustainability in brownfields redevelopment across Canada. Working with key industry and professional organizations, the Canadian Urban Institute presents its awards at its annual Brownfields conference.

The Canadian Urban Institute endorses the efforts of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy to remove barriers to brownfields redevelopment across Canada and is committed to promoting awareness and an improved understanding of opportunities to regenerate urban sites and neighbourhoods.

The CUI Brownie Awards program is supported financially by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

Brownie Awards Gala Dinner

This gala dinner is held every year as part of the Canadian Brownfields conference.  In 2010 it will take place on Tuesday, November 2nd at the Westin Prince Hotel.  Tickets may be purchased separately from the conference, but are included with all full conference registrations.

Nominating a project, program or person for the CUI Brownie Awards

The nominations take place in two phases.  Phase 1 is usually announced in early spring, and initial submissions are screened before moving on to Phase 2, where more in-depth material is requested and considered.

All Phase 2 submissions are considered by the CUI Brownie Awards jury, which is comprised of representatives from ten professional and industry associations. In addition to the Canadian Urban Institute and Canadian Brownfields Network, the jury includes representatives from the Canadian Institute of Planners/Ontario Professional Planners Institute; About Remediation; Ontario Centre for Environmental Technology Advancement; Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario; Federation of Canadian Municipalities; Building, Industry and Land Development; Ontario Association of Architects; Natural Resources Canada.

The jury selects Finalists and Winners in 7 categories, and also awards 3 best-in-class Brownies.
