The environmental remediation process has created a “clean” development site for a vibrant new mixed-use waterfront community that provides full public access and greatly enhances the natural, commercial and recreational wealth of the town. The Shipyards redevelopment has and will greatly enhance the economic wealth of the Town of Collingwood. The marketing, development and construction activities on the project have already provided for a number of employment opportunities in the area. The redevelopment incorporates public community space as well as a future commercial retail centre, thus enabling the extension of the town’s main street commercial district. The recreational and cultural features being incorporated in this project will also further support the area tourism goals. These initiatives strengthen the Town of Collingwood’s motto of a “place to live, work and play”. The Shipyards redevelopment also parallels the municipal goals of strategic, manageable, economic growth policies.
The developer was committed to stakeholders in participating in the design of this new waterfront community. Key project initiatives design include:
- A public access to a new waterfront promenade park with future transient boat docking facilities.
- A new public gathering square at the terminus of the town’s main street with the ability to host intimate music events and art shows.
- The physical extension of the main street commercial district to the water supported in the near future with 35,000 sq. ft. of commercial retail space.
- The incorporation of public art and historical artifacts in the public space.
- The creation of an amphitheatre for open air performances.
- The introduction and enhancement of an extensive wetland habitat along the shores of the harbour constructed with 100% crushed recycled concrete and rock from the site.
- The creation of a number of pedestrian and bike-only trails connecting to an existing extensive regional trail network.
