Identification and Characterization of Niagara’s Top Brownfield Redevelopment Opportunities - Region of Niagara, ON
Finalist in Category 1 - Legislation, Policy and Program Development, and Category 6 - Communications, Marketing, and Public Engagement
The Region of Niagara Top Redevelopment Opportunities Inventory (ROI) project promotes the remediation and redevelopment of a large inventory of brownfield sites in 11 local municipalities across the Regional Municipality of Niagara in Ontario. The ROI was designed to be a comprehensive and effective marketing tool that will reach a broad audience of developers, investors, real estate and other support professionals. The primary goal of the ROI is to generate enhanced interest in remediating and redeveloping brownfield sites in the Region of Niagara.
The ROI removes the barrier of getting developers to investigate brownfield redevelopment opportunities in an area by providing easy access to an array of site information in an easy to use format. The ROI and marketing profiles will be made available online in a searchable format, as well as being available in CD and hardcopy format.
The ROI, including the Smart Redevelopment Framework, can be easily replicated in other areas and the evaluation criteria can also be modified or re-weighted to this end. For the Windsor Brownfield Strategy, RCI Consulting and MMM Group modified the Niagara Smart Redevelopment Framework based on input from Windsor staff and key stakeholders and applied the modified framework to rate some 130 brownfield sites in Windsor.
The marketing profiles/advanced visualizations have already assisted in attracting/furthering development on a number of key sites.
